The first traces of human presence date back to prehistoric times. The area saw the presence of the Illyrians, Greeks and Romans. It seems that the toponym Punat derives from the Latin word pons (bridge) due to the possible presence of a bridge that connected the strait that leads to Puntarska draga with the south of the island. Punat was first mentioned in a written text in 1377.
Today Punat has about 1,800 inhabitants, almost all devoted to tourism.
